PictureFree Response #3 Tetons and Snake River © Ansel Adams - Uses wide framing & golden ratio (phi grid) to compose the image
Create 4 presentation worthy images that use all the 12 composition techniques listed below. You must use all techniques within the 4 images you turn in. For example a photograph shoot from a birds eye view, using rule of thirds and leading lines.

Tip- start with vantage point images as they cannot be combined (bird's eye, ant's eye & direct approach)

1. Birds Eye View
2. Ants Eye View
3. Direct Approach
4. Tight Framing
5. Wide Framing
6. Frame within a Frame (Object as a Frame)
7. Rule of Thirds
8. Golden Ratio
9. Silhouette
10. Reflections
11. Leading Lines
12. Dutch Angle

What is 'Free Response':
Each day we will start the class responding to a photograph. The photograph may relate to the lesson of the day or maybe a current or historical event. The purpose of this exercise is to get you thinking about the power of a photograph and what makes a photograph 'good' or interesting. Spending time deeply examining one image allows you to dissect its content (subject matter, technique, composition). You may respond to the image however you feel most comfortable- drawing, writing or a combination. You should work to fill the page in the ten minute time period, and if you 'finish' early- keep going and ask yourself what more do I see.

Composition Scavenger Hunt

To turn-in, use the table in the document provided and place each image in the appropriate box. Write one sentence (or more if needed) to explain in what way your image uses the technique. Turn in when complete.

SHOOTING ASSIGNMENT:
Following the ‘Photo Pass’ rules, you will explore the Quads (main & V) and take pictures showing the following techniques. If you are unfamiliar with the technique you may look it up- but that will cost you time. Images should be original, show variety of subjects, and be compositionally and technically well executed. Edit using 'Snapseed' or similar photo editing app.

Techniques to find:
Bird’s Eye View
Ant’s (worm’s) Eye View
Direct Approach
Tight Framing
Wide Framing
Natural Frame
Rule of Thirds
Golden Ratio
Silhouette
Reflection
Leading Lines
Dutch Angle

My name is Mrs. Olden (formerly Ms. McKay) and I will be your teacher this year. I have prepared a syllabus for you and it is available online at the class website.

You will want to memorize and/or bookmark this link. I will post assignments there as well as resources and a gallery. Absent? Check here & Google Classroom to see what you missed.

Tonight your homework is to bring your parent or guardian to the website, find and review the syllabus and digitally sign it. You AND your parent or guardian must both sign the form. (Hint: hover over the appropriate course and click on > Syllabus)

For this course you will also need a sketchbook for daily warm-ups and planning sketches. I highly suggest a spiral bound sketchbook. You can also use blank paper and 3-hole punch it and put it in a binder or 3-hole folder. Please let me know as soon as possible if you need assistance in getting a sketchbook.

In addition, I suggest that you have an external hard drive for this class. These come at a cost but will make saving and keeping your images much easier. If you plan to get your own subscription to Adobe CC Lightroom & Photoshop for home use this will make things seamless as you can load the same catalog of images at home and at school. These portable hard drives are about $50-$60 for 1 TB and can be found on Amazon, Staples, Fry's and Costco.

If you have any questions or problems, please email me a
