Self Portrait Photography

11/27/2018

In this project you will be creating a series of self portraits. You will use Mind Mapping and Brainstorming Strategies to come up with your ideas.

Pre-Planning: Mindmapping

Due end of class: 11/28 (odd) or 11/29 (even)
Complete in Google Classroom or on paper & turn in

Part 1: Scan-o-gram

Using a flatbed scanner as a camera, create an image that tells the view about yourself. You can place your objects and your face on the scanner. By moving during the scan you can distort your objects or face.

When done, clean the scanner well so it is ready for the next person to use.

Part 2: Interpretive Studio Self Portrait

Create an interpretive self portrait (one that conveys your personality / or makes a statement) in the studio. Use angles, light, environments, culture, body language, props and symbols as a means to convey the abstract.

You are required to use a tripod and the camera self-timer or remote when completing this assignment.

Part 3: Non-Literal Self Portraits (x2)

Create two 'non-literal' self portraits from two of the different categories below.

You must create sketches for both ideas including the category and concept behind the image and have approved by Mrs. Olden before you can check out a camera & tripod:

SIGNATURE
The essential you, what are you known for, how people see you.
PROJECTION
You as someone else, playing a role, becoming something you are not.
SELF STUDY
Looking inside yourself, showing a part of you people do not know, reflective, showing what is on the inside.
FANTASY
Surreal, Fantasy, Dreamlike, Unrealistic.

Ideas:
  • Double Exposure
  • Photo Collage (See David Hockney & Chuck Close)
  • Altering a print - drawing, painting, cutting, folding burning (See Arnulf Rainer)
  • Still Life - objects that represent something you
  • Slow Shutter speed (see Francesca Woodman)
  • Covering your face/body
  • Incorporate a uniform
  • Incorporating location (home, bedroom, work, etc)
  • Put yourself in a dream or unrealistic situation (See Brooke Shaden or Erik Johansson)
  • Visualize the hidden/unseen (emotions, past experiences, relationships, thoughts, feelings)
