Flat Pack Toy

4/26/2013

Picture
A flat pack toy is a toy that can be sent flat and then later assembled. You will be creating a character that will become 3 dimensional once assembled. In the project we will be using a new program, Adobe Illustrator which is a vector based program (think of your vector self portrait). You will be familiar with many of the tools as we have used them in Adobe Photoshop.

Two tutorials on how to make your own flat pack toy: Spoongraphics | Computer Arts

CHARACTER DESIGN: Due 5/2/13 - Score _____/10
First you need to conceptualize your character. Think of a story for your character, what do they do, what do they like and dislike, are they old young or in between, are they mean, happy, love struck, goofy, angry, do they have a short temper? You can even draw from your own life, basing your character on someone you know or even yourself.

Now that you have your character in mind, it is time to put your ideas on paper. You will start by sketching out ideas for your character and then you will scan your sketches into the computer. The main features that show expression and personality in a character are the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth. Focus on these features to really bring your character to life. Figure out which features of your character you want to accentuate and base your toy around them.

TEMPLATE:  Due 5/3/13 – Score _____/10
Once you have scanned your sketched it is time to ‘vectorize’ them, clean them up and make your character work as a cube.
1.       In Illustrator create a new Letter size document in landscape orientation.
2.       In a new layer names OUTLINE, make a simple box diagram. Use the rectangle tool to create a perfect square by holding down Shift while dragging. Then duplicate it six times by holding down Alt while dragging the original box.
3.       If your character doesn't need a bottom because it will sit flat on the surface, you may delete the bottom square.
4.       Put place holder text in corresponding squares to help you keep track of what’s what. (face, side, back, top, side)
5.       Now alter the sides of the squares to better reflect the shape of your character. Make sure that opposite sides correspond in height and width. This means that the width of your sides needs to be the same as the height of the top square.
6.       If you put arms on either side of the head, they will stick straight out when the top is folded down. They may look too long but bear in mind that once the template has been folded together, the only parts of the arms that will stick out are the areas that extend past the front of the torso. Make sure to label the arms.
7.       An area equal to the width of the arms should be removed from the sides of the box, so the arms won’t overlap the other paper.

Save Adult Schools in California

3/14/2013

Picture
ROP & Adult Schools:

1. The Governor's proposal dismantles ROP and eliminates all ROP as of July 1, 2013.

2. Every school District that offers CTE will be given an adjusted ADA allotment of $215 per student enrolled in grades 9-12. This would be census data and would include the total enrollment in the school district.

3.  These funds could be used to fund current CTE programs in ROP but once again, it is completely unrestricted for districts to spend as they choose too.

4. Because the SDCOE is the LEA for ROP, the SDCOE would receive all of the ROP funds they received this year (as part of the "hold harmless" agreement made for all LEA's but it would be up to the SDCOE if they choose to fund CTE in the local districts). They will have complete local control of all ROP funds that will be deposited into the general fund of the county office and will be spent as they deem fit.

Photoshop Tutorial

3/5/2013

Picture
3/5- Today you will spend the period completing a tutorial. You have completed tutorial before. Following tutorials is one way digital artists learn and update their skills as technology is always changing.

Make sure the tutorial uses Photoshop and not another program. Pick a tutorial that is just beyond your skill level so you push yourself to learn something new, read through it first before you start! If you get stumped check out this page, google it (ex- 'where to find blur filter in photoshop cs6'), or ask a classmate nearby for a quick question.
Use the images provided in the tutorials or find your own images on the internet (search for large quality).

Lastly, make the finish tutorial you create look like a finished piece and not 'an exercise', something you could print out and display!

First person to finish can create a new turn-in folder on the V drive > McKay > Digital Art > Period > TUTORIAL
You must turn in what you have completed by the end of class! Lastname_First_tutorial.psd

Choose from the following tutorials & sites:

Tutorials: Colorize a B&W Photo | Space Warp Implosion | Futuristic Composition | Texture & Depth with Type | Break the JPEG Code | Mixing Vector Shapes | Create Distorted Text | Creating cardiac rate effect | Displaced text | How to create scotch tape | Create a laserbeam on body | Adding 'creative' label to skin | Adding colorful curved lines | Creating Custom Patterns | Symmetrical Abstraction | 50 photoshop tutorials

Stop Motion PSA

2/22/2013

Picture
You will be working in small groups to make a Public Service Announcement for KVHS using stop motion Techniques.

We have watched the old and tired PSA's on KVHS, time to do it our way. In our PSAs we need to get our audiences' attention while still delivering our message. Think of some commercials you have watched, maybe from this past weekend's Superbowl .. which ones stand out & why?

Today you will be working in your small groups

2/22- TODAY'S DIRECTIONS:
Once your group decides on a general idea for Clean Campus or Character Counts it is time to create your storyboard. Remember to be creative (and school appropriate- no violence, blood or gore) and think of unique and original ways to get your peers attention and still convey you message.
READ: How to create a storyboard
You will be creating drawings (6 or more) that tell us the story and what your PSA will look like. As a group you will create one set of drawings in Photoshop. Using letter size document (8.5h x 11w) @72ppi, landscape (horizontal) orientation for each drawing.  Save the drawings in a New Folder > Stop Motion Storyboard. Each drawing should consider angle, framing and location (basically how close are you, are you shooting direct view, from above or below, etc). You must have a completely planned and well thought out storyboard presentation and present to the class before you can shoot your final PSA. Here is a Sample.
Work together and create 1 presentation per group, insert the drawings each on their own slide in a PowerPoint presentation. Make sure to have a title slide with the title and your names. When finished Turn in to V: > McKay > Digital Art > Period > Storyboard Presentation

Your group's presentation needs to be finished by the end of class today. Groups will present next class.

Your group may choose to work on one of these campaigns:

Keep our Campus Clean
or
Character Counts | What is Character?
  • Trustworthiness
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Fairness
  • Caring
  • Citizenship
If choosing character counts, you may illustrate one particular pillar of character, or introduce the 6 pillars of character.
